Using AI Tools to Plan Your Next Adventure?

Updated: Aug 16, 2023

It's 2023 and damn-near everything is Ai-generated these days.

From art exhibits to music artists, business tools to virtual assistants, restaurant servers to taxi drivers, there's almost nothing you can't accomplish with help from using AI. According to Forbes, The AI market is projected to reach a staggering $407 billion by 2027, meaning there's no decline for the AI takeover in sight.

But what exactly is AI?

AI, short for Artificial Intelligence, is some of the most cutting edge, rapidly- growing, game-changing technology available today. AI is most notably a branch of computer science where machines and computers simulate human intelligence. Working in tandem with humans, AI tools can help us make better choices and has made the human experience easier.

It’s no surprise that AI is popular in the travel and tourism industry, and that professionals use it in a lot of different ways. Chances are you haven’t used A.I. to plan a vacation. However, that’s about to change with these free AI powered travel planning apps, like ChatGPT to prepare an itinerary for you in a few seconds.

1. Chat GPT:

ChatGPT is AI-powered and uses natural language processing. Tell ChatGPT your destination, travel dates, budget and any other vital information for a detailed itinerary based on your personal preferences. If you are not happy, you can ask for improvements and personalize the entire itinerary as per your needs. The ChatGPT iOS app can also warn against inclement weather and can add some creative suggestions like visiting the enchanting Odaiba Seaside Park or taking in the views from Tokyo Tower and observatory at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

2. Tripit:

TripIt is a travel organizer and itinerary manager that provides real-time updates about flight

schedules, cancellations, and gate changes. One of my personal favorites, because as soon as you make a booking, forward it to TripIt, and they will add it to your itinerary. More importantly, they allow users to access all the details both offline and online.

You can access to their premium features by upgrading to PRO which will provide you with exclusive features like flight status alerts, refund alerts, fare drops, and more.

3. Roamaround.io

RoamAround.io uses the internet's favorite AI chat app to help you plan your travel in any city. The app is not super sophisticated by any means, but it's simpler than even learning how to put the right prompt in the original ChatGPT to get what you want.

Roam Around asks you the city you're planning to visit. We'd advise treating it more as a reference or template to start your travel planning, which you can then check with other guides to fix an itinerary.

4. Curiosio

Curiosio is the easiest last-minute travel planner designed specifically for roadtrips. Using it's own AL engine, Igeenee, the website can help you plan an itinerary for a road trip to several major countries on all continents. It doesn't cover every single place, but the existing collection is impressive enough. Pulling information from several crowdsourced travel-based resources, such as Wikivoyage, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Freebase, DBpedia, GeoNames, OSMNames, and OpenStreetMap, Curiosio it's able to chart an itinerary that meets your requirements across various parameters.

You can set options for a round trip or a one-way trip, any places you want to visit on the way, the number of travelers, dates of the journey, what vehicle you're using, total budget, and etc. and the AI will usually give you multiple plans and routes for these options.

5. Hopper

Hopper, one of the apps I personally utilize the most, uses AI to analyze flight prices, hotels, short-term vacation rentals, and car rentals and predicts future trends and provides optimal booking time and additional offers. It can provide personalized recommendations based on user preferences and budgets. Perfect for finding the best deals on different parts of your travel arrangements, and also can be used to get real-time updates about flights. The best part is you can freeze prices and earn REAL money to use towards bookings when you refer a friend.

6. Wonderplan.ai

Wonderplan.ai is a fun tool to plan your trip. Wonderplan.ai first asks you to enter your destination country and city, your budget, the number of days you'll be staying, and your interests. It then creates a travel plan within a few minutes, displaying various places to visit, their descriptions, and the time usually spent at each location. Although Wonderplan.ai doesn't show the trip map, it does provide a link to Google Maps for each place.

It also displays different types of accommodation available (like Airbnb, hotel, or hostel) and their respective costs. Similarly, there are details about transportation, food, and activities. This way, you can estimate the potential cost of your trip.

Additional Resources

Some of my favorite honorable mentions are iplan.ai, bard.google, kayak, tripplanner.ai, and ixigo. TripAdvisor, Expedia, Google Maps, Airbnb, Skyscanner, and Google Assistant are all some of the most popularly used apps who are now utilizing AI and machine learning to personalize their results.

The Limitations of Travel Planning AI Apps

All these travel planning AI apps urge you not to use the itinerary as-is and only treat it as a template or guide to begin planning your trip. Why is thta, you're probably wondering. The reason is, most AI tools currently have several limitations, like databases that aren't recently updated or require specific prompts from the user.

And although AI-generated tools are fun to interact with, they’re still no substitute for human-created itineraries and social media videos that provide insider tips. A real human travel professional is still going to understand you better and give you a more customized itinerary that suits your requirements.

Of course, that's going to cost you a few bucks but if you want a free base guide, these travel planning apps are a good starting point.
